J-1 VISA in 7 steps!

J-1 VISA in 7 steps:

When you finally find a family you need to do a lot of things before leaving and in this post I'll talk about one of the most important: the J-1 VISA!

1. Acceptance letter + Sevis + DS-2019

These documents will arrive directly from Cultural Care to your adress and you need to read them, sign the DS-2019 form and take them with you the day of the interview in the Embassy.

2. DS-160 online form

The DS 160 is the longest form you need to fill online and the instructions are given directly by Cultural Care!

It must be written in english on this website

ATTENTION: You should save your form every 5 min, beacuse the website gets often out of order.

It has several parts to fill:

  • Personal information;
  • Address + phone number;
  • Passport + travel information;
  • US point of contact (your host family contacts);
  • Family information;
  • Your education;
  • Security + background;
  • Sevis information (you find them in number 1);
  • Photo (see number 4).

After reviewing your form you need to sign it, submit and print the confirmation letter you have to take with you at the embassy.

3. American Embassy Appointment

After completing number 2, you need to take an appointment at the American Embassy in your Country.

In Italy the chances are four: Milan, Florence, Rome and Naples.

You need to log in this site, create a new account and put your DS-160 confirmation number.

ATTENTION: It's very important to select the nearest place to pick up your Visa. Otherwise you can pay 30 euros and there'll be a Courier Service that brings your Visa directly to your home place (I chose this!).

4-5-6. Photo+Passport+Extra

  • Photo: You need to upload a photo (5x5cm) online while writing the DS-160 form, but you can go on even without a photo and decide to go to your appointment with it!
  • Passport: You need to bring it with you too (of course) and it has to be valid at least 6 months after your return (so more than 1,5 years) and you need a white page for the new stamp.
  • Extra: At the embassy you need to take with you some "extras" that prove you're able to pay for your trip. I'll take with me a copy of my poste count!

7. Reminder + Travel

The last thing to do is to put your appointment in Google Calendar, put in order everything you need and organize the day trip to the embassy.

You'll finally have your VISA!
